Assisted Living vs. Independent Living

Researching senior housing options may seem overwhelming at times. Senior living facilities have several housing options available that depend on an individual’s ability or inability to care for their daily needs. Independent living and assisted living are two of the primary options available to seniors who wish to reap the benefits of community living while maintaining an independent lifestyle. Understanding the differences between each of these senior care options is important to ensure that you or your loved one are receiving the quality care that is required to maintain a happy, healthy lifestyle.

Independent Living

Independent living is best suited for adults age 55+ who are looking to simplify their day-to-day routine by releasing the responsibilities that pair with living alone or being a homeowner. Most senior living facilities that offer independent living will provide amenities such as dining, social activities, transportation, housekeeping and social events. Residents will enjoy the freedom of a home-like environment. They are able to thrive in a vibrant community while still maintaining a private residence.

Living independently within a senior living community is ideal for those who are capable of caring for themselves but enjoy the conveniences of the amenities that many communities offer. Private housing accommodations can be found in the form of a studio, single bedroom, or a two to three-bedroom apartment. Depending on the facility, single level homes are sometimes available as well.

Assisted Living

Assisted living facilities provide an at-home environment in which independent living and individualized health services are combined. An assisted living environment allows individuals to maintain their autonomy while accessing the level of assistance they require in their day-to-day lives. Skilled doctors and nurses will maintain individualized health plans and assist patients in dressing, bathing and most other routine activities throughout the day.

All assisted living facilities accommodate their residents care needs by setting up schedules that staff and residents must follow. The services offered to individuals in an assisted living community vary but most facilities include health care monitoring, medication management and meal preparation in an environment similar to independent living. Seniors will have the option to choose from a variety of housing options and will receive comprehensive care in the home of their choice.
